About BIG Counties
Beaver County
Nestled in the heart of southwestern Utah, Beaver County is known for its rich pioneer history, outdoor recreation, and small-town charm. Founded in 1856, the county was named for the abundance of beavers along its rivers and streams. Today, it offers residents and visitors access to hiking, fishing, and hunting, as well as historic landmarks that reflect its pioneer roots. Beaver County also has a strong agricultural tradition and is home to renewable energy development, particularly wind and solar.
Iron County
Iron County, often called the “Gateway to the National Parks,” is a hub of culture, history, and natural beauty. Its county seat, Cedar City, is well known for the Utah Shakespeare Festival and Southern Utah University, both of which draw visitors from across the state and beyond. The county is rich in outdoor opportunities, with access to Cedar Breaks National Monument, Brian Head Resort, and nearby Zion and Bryce Canyon National Parks. Historically, Iron County was named for its early iron ore deposits, which fueled pioneer industry and settlement.
Garfield County
Stretching across some of Utah’s most iconic landscapes, Garfield County is home to Bryce Canyon National Park, Capitol Reef National Park, Grand Staircase–Escalante National Monument, and portions of Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. With only a few thousand residents spread across a vast area, the county is defined by wide-open spaces and breathtaking scenery. Tourism is a key part of the economy, supported by ranching and small-town communities that preserve the rural character of the region.
